The complex of crosses in Elorrio is currently the largest in the Basque Country. It represents ten percent of the crosses inventoried in the Basque Country.

There are currently nine crosses in Elorrio. All of them are 16th century works and, except for the late Gothic Kurutziaga cross, they show phases of the Renaissance style.
Some of them, such as Kurutzebarri, Kurutzondo, Ganondo and Txanberikoa, are located on the roads leading out of the town centre and establish boundaries with the rural environment, while Santa Ana, Kurutziaga and San Juan were located in the old suburbs, but have now been fully integrated into the town centre.
These urban landmarks could have served as a reference point to establish a cordon sanitaire in the event of the spread of an epidemic. However, they served above all as a support for devotional parish figures, to which travellers were recommended when they left the protection provided by the wall enclosure. Some say that they were also used to ward off witches.
