Here it is the explanation of where the name Elorrio comes from. In Spanish, it means hawthorn, hawthorn is a type of tree, and ‘elorria’ is also used to designate the red fruits of this tree.

Due to the abundance of hawthorn bushes around this area, it was christened Elorrio (elordia). For this reason, in the town’s coat of arms, the hawthorn leaf appears next to the silhouette of a castle.

As both icons appear together, it seems that they want to highlight the cultural and natural heritage of the municipality.

If you go to the Puerta del Campo in San Pío street, you can see this type of leaf and the only gate still standing in the old wall.
