Diaspora of the Elorrian people

Many people in the past had to emigrate from Elorrio in search of a better life. Some families headed south to cities like Cadiz and Seville, but some people had to travel even further, to America.

Now, in the 21st century, and with much more ease to follow these long routes, many people come to the tourist office in Elorrio to learn more about their ancestors.
Every month, someone comes to the tourist office asking them what their original farm or palace is. There are those who have relationships with the family of San Valentín de Berrio Otxoa and come to know their homeland. But there are also those who have the surname Urkizu, Ibarra, Arriola… and want to know more about their roots and the places of origin of their ancestors.
These visits are always enriching, both for the families who come to know the land of their ancestors and for us, so as we can expand the knowledge of the history of the inhabitants of the town who had to emigrate one day, for whatever reason, .
